Someone I know and love was recently, prescribed statins to lower her cholesterol level. I was unconvinced though. I suspect you don’t need statin drugs. In fact, I’d go so far as saying that the people I know who’ve been on them, have had serious health issues as a result of taking them. I certainly think we’ve got a lot more to learn about cholesterol.
From the conversation she reported to me, It sounds as though:
- There was only one measurement taken i.e. a blanket score, instead of measuring the different sorts of cholesterol.
- The doctor was simply following protocol, despite being unconvinced by its efficacy.
- She was well aware that what she was prescribing was not just useless, but dangerous too.
Isn’t it amazing that most doctors are still operating from out of date information?
I hear a little rumour that doctors, chiropractors and other health workers in the near future will be obliged to pass regular exams, to keep their knowledge up to date. While I see this as essential, I’ll be intrigued to see how they cope with an even heavier work-load…
